Finding HOPE in uncertain times
A quiet song in a noisy world
The new year started with a lot of geopolitical uncertainty. For those of us who are privileged, we have a choice: focus on the negative and ruminate on it, or channel our energy into being our best selves.
I choose the latter.
There is hope and love in this world—more than the headlines would have you believe.
Charlie Mackesy captures this beautifully: “Hope is the quiet song in your heart that can sing in spite of everything.” And when doubt creeps in, I remind myself of another of his insights: “Sometimes, all you hear about is the hate, but there is more love in this world than you can possibly imagine.”
Over time, I’ve stopped reading or watching the news and scrolling social media feeds. This has a twofold effect: it helps me avoid content rabbit holes—known as doomscrolling (we currently scroll 300 feet a day!)—and it protects my energy for what matters most.
This doesn’t mean I don’t know what’s happening in the world. I do. But the amount of time and energy I put into consuming it is near zero.
The world needs people who are grounded, hopeful, and ready to contribute—not people paralysed by an endless stream of fear and outrage. We can stay informed without being consumed.
So here’s my invitation for this year: tend to your inner life. Protect your attention. And trust that quiet song of hope, even when the noise feels deafening.
There is more love out there than you know.
